Time off - What to do in the area
Marquês de Pombal
Lisbon's expansion northwards shifted the downtown area from Rossio to Marquês de Pombal square, which became one of the most historic and distinguished squares in the city. The converging point for several of Lisbon's principal avenues, this "Roundabout" is located next to Eduardo VII Park. To the centre, you can find the statue of Marquês de Pombal, who was responsible for rebuilding downtown Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake.
Parque Eduardo VII
This park's gardens extend from the top of one of Lisbon's hills to the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, without ever losing sight of the Tagus River and Avenida da Liberdade. Inserted in this space, the Cold Greenhouse has a unique atmosphere created by watercourses and artificial grottos, among a lush and exotic collection of plants.
Avenida da Liberdade
Avenida da Liberdade opened in the second half of the 19th century and allowed the city to expand North. It remains the most beautiful and elegant avenue in Lisbon, offering cool shade provided by the centennial trees, and is a prime location for corporations and renowned international fashion brands. Enjoy sunny afternoons shopping and strolling, and let the Avenue carry you downtown towards the historic centre.
Centre of Modern Art Azeredo Perdigão
(Rua Doutor Nicolau de Bettencourt " 1050 Lisboa)
Located in a modern building at one end of the Gulbenkian gardens, this museum is devoted to showcasing 20th century art, including painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving and photography, with collections by the some of the last century's most important artists.
Museum Calouste Gulbenkian
(Avenida de Berna, 45 " 1093 Lisboa)
Home to one of the best art collections in Europe, this museum has an important nucleus of Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Islamic art, among others. The Réné Lalique jewellery collection is a highlight. The Gulbenkian Foundation's space is surrounded by a lush garden with a small lake and sculptures, a lovely meeting point for reading or for a good chat.
Santo Amaro/Alcântara
There are lots of options to choose from along the Tagus Riverbank, both in terms of variety and quality. Where once old and abandoned warehouses stood, today there are some of the Lisbon's best and busiest bars and restaurants.
Alfama/Bairro Alto/Mouraria
In the Alfama, Castelo and Mouraria quarters, located on the hill crowned by São Jorge's Castle, there are remains of walls and traces dating back to the old Jewish neighbourhoods. Explore the Alfama Tower or S. Miguel and Santo Estêvão churches, and discover remnants of old palaces as well as ancient terraces, alleys, arches, stairways, lookouts and patios. Still in this area, between the Sta. Engrácia and S. Vicente churches, visit the Feira da Ladra fleamarket, filled with local and foreign visitors that on Tuesdays and Saturdays seek unique items and great bargains. The Bairro Alto and Bica are two of the capital's most picturesque areas, home to a unique blend of both the most traditional and most avant-garde stores, with the typical lifestyle of a small neighborhood coexisting with an eclectic and lively nightlife. The Bica elevator, built in 1892, provides a charming climb along the hill. The São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint is also a must, offering a stunning view over Avenida da Liberdade, the Castle and Downtown.
Belém " The Discovery City
Further along the riverbank, Belém has a profound connection with Portugal's Age of Discovery, since it was from here that the ships departed on their adventures. Today, this is a broad, open area, with extensive gardens and imposing monuments such as the Jeronimos Monastery and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, as well as the Torre de Belém next to the Belém Cultural Centre and the Planetarium. Just a few paces away, visit the famous Belém pastry shop and sink your teeth into one of the delicious creamy pastries that Portugal has become known for.
