The first edition of the Lisbon Basketball Youth Cup took place on June 27 at the Henrique Miranda Pavilion in the outskirts of Lisbon. We had a blast, together with over 100 young athletes from U14, U16, and U18 boys and girls teams, who played their best basketball in exciting matches full of grit, skill, and loads of fun!
Great teams, great games, great basketball!
The first match of the day opposed Quinta dos Lombos and Sport Algés e Dafundo U14 girls' teams. The girls from Quinta dos Lombos were slightly taller and more athletic than their opponents and used that to their advantage, making a very strong entry into the game. Showing excellent organization in both defence and attack, they quickly jumped ahead on the scoreboard. The girls from Algés showed a good reaction in the second half, but the Lombo's lead was too big to recoup. In the end, the victory was a natural fit for Quinta dos Lombos. Sport Algés e Dafundo team featured some very young players who certainly learned a lot from facing one of the best Portuguese teams in the U14 category.
Next on the court were the U18 boys' teams from Sporting Clube de Portugal and Clube Basket Queluz, two historical youth basketball clubs. This was an extremely competitive game, with both teams presenting a very high level of play, with great intensity in both defence and attack. With a strong start, the players from Clube Basket Queluz asserted their greater stature and physical power at the backboard to win over Sporting, which team was made of a mix of U18 players and some younger ones. An excellent basketball game!
The best was saved for last! The match between the boys' U16 teams from Clube Atlético Queluz and Sport Lisboa e Benfica, another two historical basketball clubs, had all the ingredients of a great sports show. These two extremely competitive teams battled to the last second, showing all their quality with some spectacular moves and constant changes in the lead. All players gave it all in the quest for victory. In the end, victory smiled upon Clube Atlético Queluz, who took the trophy home with a 1-point win.
What a great game to end the first edition of the Lisbon Basketball Youth Cup! Move Sports, the tournament organiser, would like to thank all the teams that made it a great success and an amazing day of basketball! We would also like to thank Clube Atlético de Queluz and its president, João Machado, for hosting the first edition of our tournament at the Henrique Miranda Pavilion. We extend our greetings to the Portuguese Basketball Federation and the Lisbon Basketball Association: thank you for all the support!
We did it again: a tournament amidst a pandemic
Although the event was deemed a success by all involved, it was not the tournament we all wanted. The restrictions brought about by COVID-19 were such that only teams from the Greater Lisbon area were able to participate. There were also no fans in the stands, but the exciting games were broadcast on the Internet for basketball fans around the world to see.
This is the second tournament that Move Sports puts on during the pandemic. Last fall, we held a special edition of the Portugal Rugby Youth Festival. This coming September and October we'll do it again, with a lot of enthusiasm, a great love for sports, and in compliance with all health & safety measures needed. We're getting ready for Portugal Legends Handball Cup, Portugal Rugby Youth Festival, and Lisbon Football Youth Cup as you read this!
