Due to the new coronavirus epidemic, the Portugal Legends Handball Cup will be postponed to October 2, 3 & 4, 2020. LX50 Handball and Move Sports, the event organisers, are making this decision in line with the latest recommendations from the Portuguese Government, through its National Health Service (NHS), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Portuguese Handball Federation, which cancelled all handball activity in the country as of yesterday.
The first edition of this masters tournament, which will bring together senior players in a competitive, high-level event, at the Lisbon University Stadium, was scheduled for June 5, 6 & 7. This postponement is part of the effort to contain the new coronavirus epidemic. All over the world, handball international competitions are being cancelled by the European Handball Federation and the International Handball Federation, over concerns about the spread of the covid-19 virus.
The evolution of the epidemic in Portugal and what is being done
WHO declared covid-19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
On March 12, 2020, the Portuguese Government, following recommendations from the National Health Service, but also from the WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, adopted a widespread set of measures to contain and mitigate the effects of the outbreak in Portugal.
The adoption of preventive measures in the initial phase of an epidemic threat is one of the most effective responses to contain it. Therefore, the Portuguese Government ordered that schools and universities be closed. Other facilities will have some form of access restriction in place. All around the country, sports competitions are being cancelled and, in this context, the Portuguese Handball Federation advised the temporary cancellation of all competitions and for all age groups.
LX50 Handball and Move Sports remind everyone that these are preventive measures to stop the unnecessary spread of contagious diseases. The National Health Service continues to advise the practice of physical exercise, which strengthens the immune system, so important in combating these illnesses. Additionally, personal and social hygiene habits are indispensable in preventing any type of infection.
