World Travel Awards – the global initiative to recognize and reward excellence in travel and tourism – has announced the winners of its Europe 2020 programme. Portugal was elected, for the fourth consecutive year, as the Leading Destination in Europe.
Known as the "Oscars of Tourism", the World Travel Awards are given out following a year-long selection and voting by professionals in the sector. From the extensive list of awards, Portugal won 21. Porto was elected Leading City Break Destination and Lisbon was awarded the title of Leading Cruise Destination. The Azores were distinguished as the Leading Adventure Tourism Destination and the Madeira islands were winners as well, considered Leading Island Destination. For the hikers, Passadiços do Paiva (Arouca Unesco Global Geopark) took home the Leading Adventure Tourist Attraction award. The Algarve became once again the Leading Beach Destination - and its definitely a wonderful choice for a sports tour, as the Gladstone Knights boys found out back in 2019. Portugal is a great choice for a sports tour, training camp or corporate event, as the United Nations can attest, having had their Inter-Agency Games in Lisbon in 2019.
The Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism, Ritas Marques, said: "It is with particular pride that we received this award in this atypical year. It is yet another proof of international confidence in our destination and an acknowledgement that Portugal's attributes remain intact and ready to be discovered by all who wish to visit us, always respecting the rules defined by the [health] authorities".
